Tanaka Raou Solo Exhibition “Sen” — Life Flashes Between Black and Gold

Tanaka Raou’s solo exhibition Sen opens at Gallery Seek on Monday, 27 April 2026.

Tanaka Raou (b. 1985), Sapporo, Hokkaido. After graduating from Hokkaido造形デザイン専門学校 (Hokkaido College of Art and Design), he began his career as a caricature artist, going on to win the overall championship and be inducted into the Hall of Fame at the ISCA Convention, an international competition held in Nevada, USA, in 2014. The acuity honed at the summit of that discipline — an ability to read the essential character of a subject in an instant — led him, in 2016, to redirect his practice toward painting, with animals as his primary subject.

The exhibition title Sen (閃) evokes the flash of life cutting through darkness. The works on view are anchored in the two colours Tanaka employs most consistently — black and gold — and executed in a mixed-media technique combining acrylic paint and ink. On each surface, meticulously rendered animals hold tension with deliberately preserved areas of unpainted ground. Where the image is present, a representational fidelity opens outward into something that expands the viewer’s imagination; where it is absent, the void carries the atmosphere held in an animal’s gaze, the kinetic afterimage of a leap, the humidity of a breath. Acrylic and ink — materials prone to bleeding — merge on the picture plane, and at times coexist without fully dissolving into one another. That quality of texture enacts something analogous to the way living things seek harmony while retaining their individual character.

Works on view include Kinjinryū, Kinmōryū, Tōgenryū, Hibana, Black Foundation, Burst of Blue, and Maelstrom.
