Tanaka Raou, Black Foundation — The Painter’s Skeletal Structure, Dormant Beneath Color

When encountering Tanaka Raou’s paintings, most viewers are arrested first by color: acrylic pigments bleeding into one another, animals whose vitality seems to surge beyond the picture plane — that world of acute chromatic intensity. Black Foundation, however, is a work in which color has been deliberately withheld.

What remains on the panel is black and silver alone. The fur that reads as white is composed, strictly speaking, entirely of silver paint. Once the layers of color are removed, what emerges is the painter’s draftsmanly armature — the precision with which the hand traces each individual hair, the directionality and velocity of the brushwork as it captures the flux of a living body. The work that Tanaka Raou regards as most fundamental to his practice is laid bare here, without ornament.

The title — Foundation, in the sense of ground and substructure — describes the work’s architecture directly. The painter’s other core method, the rendering of fluidity and vital movement, is deployed in full; and precisely because color has been withdrawn, the pressure, speed, and interval of each mark — the painter’s physical presence — communicate themselves with greater immediacy.

This is an act at the opposite pole from spectacle: understated, elemental, and yet without this layer the torrent of color that defines Tanaka’s practice could not exist. To offer the viewer a view of the foundation beneath one’s own painting is a quiet, unequivocal commitment — one condensed into a panel measuring 727 × 530 mm.

Tanaka Raou Solo Exhibition [Sen] is currently on view at Gallery Seek (Caretta Shiodome B1F). The work invites close attention to the structural ground of this painter’s practice.
