[AAFHK2026 #4] “A Talent Once in Fifty Years” Heads to Hong Kong — Introducing Mio Okazaki's 14 Works
From Thursday, May 14 through Sunday, May 17, Gallery Seek is exhibiting at Booth F02 of Affordable Art Fair Hong Kong 2026, held at the Hong Kong Convention & Exhibition Centre (HKCEC). Here we introduce one of the four artists showing with us: Mio Okazaki (b. 1995, Sapporo).
【Biography】 Okazaki graduated from the Department of Visual Communication Design, Musashino Art University (2019), receiving the university's Outstanding Graduation Work Award. After graduation she worked as a reporter for Weekly Pro-Wrestling at Baseball Magazine Co. before turning to painting full-time. She won both the Kenta Nakajima Award and the Liquitex Award at the first ARTIST NEW GATE.
【Practice】 Taking moves from professional wrestling and martial arts as her subject, Okazaki uses Cubist technique to unify the perspectives of spectators seated all around a 360-degree ring into a single picture plane — connecting the method Picasso and Braque established a century ago to the structural inevitability of ring sports. Working entirely freehand, without preliminary sketches, she carries the heat of the arena directly onto the canvas. Her unusual background as a former pro-wrestling reporter lends her deep understanding of and affection for the sport, which gives her work its persuasive force.
【Recognition】 Painter Kenta Nakajima has called Okazaki “a talent that appears once in fifty years.” Minoru Niijima, professor at Musashino Art University, has commented that he was “astonished at what kind of expression can result from devoting oneself entirely to what one loves.” As of 2023 she had a one-year commission waitlist; Hong Kong offers a rare chance to see her work firsthand.
【Recent Development】 Since 2024, Okazaki has expanded her subjects beyond pro-wrestling to other sports (baseball, basketball, rugby, golf, road cycling, skateboarding, sumo) and to musical motifs (guitarists, “CUBIST JAZZ HARMONY,” and others). She has exhibited at Art Fair Tokyo, ART BUSAN, and ART TAIPEI.

▶ ROMERO_SPECIAL / 2023 / 30S / HKD 44,579 — The legendary submission that locks an opponent's head and arm against their own leg.
▶ ANTONIO INOKI ENZUIGIRI / 2024 / S20 / HKD 31,842 — A collaboration honoring the late Antonio Inoki, reconstructing his signature spinning heel kick from his own point of view.
▶ BOSTON CRAB#03 / 2024 / S25 / HKD 38,211 — The Boston crab hold shown continuously from entry to completion, across multiple viewpoints.
▶ CUBIST JAZZ HARMONY / 2024 / φ80cm, circular canvas / HKD 28,947 — A new series depicting the improvisation of a jazz session in Cubist form.
▶ HEADLOCK / 2025 / 20S / HKD 31,842 — The moment of a headlock, captured from 360 degrees.
