A solo exhibition by painter Kenta Nakajima, “A Gaze, A Duration,” is currently on view at Sunpu Castle Museum in Shizuoka, running from July 18 through September 23, 2026.
Born in Tokyo in 1984, Nakajima graduated from the oil painting department at Musashino Art University. In 2009, at age 24, he became the youngest painter in the history of the Nitten exhibition to receive its top prize, the Tokusen. In 2023 he was inducted as the youngest member of Nitten’s Western painting division.
The exhibition traces two decades of his ongoing series “Anonymous Horizon” — canvases reduced to nothing but a horizon line and a shoreline, each one built to hold a viewer’s own memory of the sea rather than his. Alongside it hangs “Fated Roses,” a series born from roses set adrift on water and captured from above, and glimpses of his large-scale portrait work, including the two-meter painting of actor Takao Osawa shown at Nitten in 2025.
Across mediums, Nakajima works from a single conviction: that a painting, unlike a photograph or an AI-generated image, cannot be copied. It exists once.
During the run, Nakajima joined visitors in person for a gallery talk, an unusual chance to hear the artist speak directly about the work on the walls.
