About this work
In "Seii – Tsuru no Ongaeshi (The Crane's Return of a Favor)," the graceful form of a Demoiselle Crane merges with the Japanese folktale of a crane who weaves cloth in secret to repay a human's kindness. The title "Seii" (Blue Garment) draws a poetic link between the bird's blue-grey plumage and the robe of the tale's mysterious maiden. Takatsu has long favored the Demoiselle Crane as a motif, and here the bird's slender elegance is layered with narrative depth—devotion, sacrifice, and quiet sorrow. Painted in acrylic gouache on watercolor paper mounted on a wooden panel, the matte, opaque surface evokes the texture of woven silk. The horizontal composition, measuring 36.4 × 51.5 cm, unfolds like a scene from a painted scroll, inviting the viewer into a space where nature and myth are inseparable.
