Giant Salamander

About this work

Rendered in mineral pigments on washi, a giant salamander occupies the composition with a weighty stillness. The moist, mottled texture of its skin is built through repeated layering and scraping of pigment, lending the surface a tactile depth. Its gaze—what the artist terms a "neutral eye," a simple black sphere set within white—withholds emotion, drawing the viewer into a quiet contemplation of a creature whose form has persisted nearly unchanged since prehistory.
