About this work

A work by Sizzle, who applies to painting the image schema of cognitive science and the idea of unconscious projection, made with traditional Japanese materials: sumi ink, silver leaf, sulphide solution, animal glue, dosa sizing and washi. The material constraints proper to those media govern the structure of the picture — the chemical reaction by which sulphide solution discolours silver leaf, the control of bleeding through glue and sizing. Keeping out representational motifs, the traces produced by the reaction of the materials and by chance open room for the viewer to read meaning. It fixes onto washi and panel the phenomenon Sizzle calls "visual language", the passage from seeing to the generation of meaning.
