About this work
Two wrestlers locked in combat are depicted across a square canvas using a Cubist approach. Angular planes of light blue, pink, orange, and gold fragment and reassemble the figures—clenched fists, intertwined legs, wide-open eyes—presenting multiple viewpoints simultaneously. Freehand text reading "TAP?," "ASK HIM!," "ALMOST THERE!," and "MOVE!" is scattered across the composition, while "FIGURE 4 LEGLOCK" anchors the lower edge. The title references the iconic submission hold in which the legs are locked in a figure-four shape, and the recurring numeral "4" throughout the painting directly evokes this form. The phrases replicate the live audio of a match—the referee checking for a tap-out, the crowd's rising anticipation. Okazaki employs Cubism to capture the 360-degree perspectives of an audience surrounding a wrestling ring. The square canvas mirrors the ring itself. All lettering is drawn freehand without preliminary sketching, a deliberate choice to convey the chaotic energy, spontaneous cheers, and snap counts that photography and video cannot fully transmit. Visible patches of gray underpainting reflect the "gray zone" of professional wrestling—the ambiguity between real and scripted that the artist embraces rather than resolves.
