About this work
A contemporary reinterpretation of Tawaraya Sōtatsu's iconic screens depicting the wind and thunder gods. Executed in mixed media on wooden panel, the work captures the dynamic movement of both deities while introducing distinctive textures and depth to the classical imagery. Rooted in the classical composition of Tawaraya Sōtatsu's wind and thunder gods, this work on wooden panel reinterprets the iconic pair through the Bridolly character—a tin bird that cannot fly yet refuses to stop jumping. Mixed media layers build tactile depth across the surface, while elements recalling foil and natural wood grain connect Rinpa decorative traditions to a contemporary vocabulary. The transformation of a mechanical toy into guardian deities quietly charts the tension between limitation and persistence.
