About this work
Layered applications of acrylic and oil paint on cotton-mounted panel allow a figure to sink into and faintly re-emerge from bands of color. The artist's cyclical process of painting, disrupting with opaque pigment, and rebuilding leaves incidental ridges and bleeds across the surface, set against deliberately smooth passages that heighten the work's material presence. Part of the ongoing MEISAI series, the composition withholds the subject's expression, leaving the viewer to negotiate the tension between the unease and comfort of blending into one's surroundings.
