About this work

Painted on cotton canvas mounted on panel, this work layers acrylic, oil, and tempera. The surface presents a camouflage-like pattern, with the distinct textures of each medium forming complex strata across the composition. A human figure emerges only faintly from dense, layered fields of color. Built on cotton-covered panel, the surface carries acrylic ground through successive cycles of painting, disruption, and reconstruction, with oil and tempera adding viscous, tactile depth alongside more fluid passages. The resulting texture holds its own material presence apart from the image it carries. Part of the ongoing MEISAI series, the work visualizes the ambivalence of blending into one's surroundings—the unease and the comfort it simultaneously offers—leaving the viewer to read the figure's deliberately ambiguous expression.
