STATEMENT
Ayuto Sakamoto Profile 2000 Born in Fukuoka Prefecture 2024 Gallery Seek Prize, ARTIST NEW GATE Shown at ART FAIR ASIA FUKUOKA Comment While undergoing treatment for a chronic illness, he was captivated by the interplay between the pale monochrome gradations produced by the X-rays taken every morning and the scratches on the surface of the film, and from there became interested in experimental analogue photography. He became absorbed in solving, visually, the ideas that came from those X-rays and similar sources. Most of them cannot be realised as he imagines, but in the process he repeatedly encounters unexpected expressions of paint on the surface, and by accepting those too a new cycle enters the work. Between the self that approaches faithfully what physically exists, and the self that tries to hold it at a distance — shifting colour, texture and focus, filling in virtual things such as translucent layers — the interaction forms the image semi-abstractly. This not only captivates him; it holds something like a fragment of memory, a mood, a sensation, something recognisable, which also becomes a marker each viewer can understand and connect with.
