STATEMENT

Umeda pursues the possibilities of a new pictorial expression through dyeing, and through the technique of batik in particular. Looking at nature, her subject, she lets her imagination move while remaining conscious of several viewpoints at once: the filter of individual memory and sensation, and the viewpoint of other living creatures. In expression through dyeing, the way the dye spreads on water and the phenomena that arise within an irreversible process lead her to images that thought alone could not reach. As though the material itself were the guide, she builds a world by letting nature occur on the cloth. Stories and systems are born in that process, and she aims to present to the viewer an unknown world hidden within the everyday, and to bring a new point of view.
